Okay it sounds long. But this new production of <em>Opera Undone <\/em>does just that \u2013 generally speaking. This new joint ticket of <em>Tosca<\/em> and <em>La Boheme<\/em> gives each classic work an hour max, sharing the gist and the highlights, and while that\u2019s not the ideal way to enjoy classic opera, it is a whole lot of fun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perfect for short attention spans and newcomers to opera,\nthis show was also hugely enjoyable for someone like me, who wrote a thesis on <em>La Boheme<\/em> and knows almost every word.\nNot that the words mattered here: both reimagined and reformed operas are\nperformed in English, and especially in one case lots of liberties are taken\nwith the \u2018translation.\u2019 Purists and those with sticks up their butts about\nopera might not appreciate it, but it\u2019s a joy to see opera used in a flexible,\nfun way. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Tosca <\/em>is performed\nfirst, so you know the warnings about loud gun shots are coming in this half,\nunless they seriously rewrote <em>La Boheme<\/em>\n(which they did but not in a murdery way). I\u2019ve seen a traditional production\nof <em>Tosca<\/em> before but I don\u2019t know it\nwell enough to notice how much the story was changed here, if it was, aside\nfrom setting the scene during like a mob boss\u2019s reign? I think? It was\ndefinitely not during Napoleon\u2019s time, I know that much. <em>Tosca<\/em> is about an artist named Mario, who is keeping quiet the\nhiding place of his political prisoner friend Angelotti, and Mario\u2019s girlfriend\nTosca, a singer and a typical nagging annoying WOMAN that men in history have\nwritten thinking they\u2019re being funny. Obviously, this means Tosca gets jealous\neasily too, because that\u2019s how the women do. When she sees Mario\u2019s latest\npainting, of a woman, she\u2019s all WHO\u2019S THAT WHY IS SHE SO PRETTY and you\u2019re like\ngirl, it\u2019s a painting. I mean he\u2019s an Italian man living in Rome\nyou probably have realer problems to worry about. But the evil Scarpia, the\nchief of police, goads her to be jealous of the painting so you know he\u2019s the\nbad guy straight away. He wants to bang Tosca and kill Mario, since he\u2019s pretty\nsure the latter knows where Angelotti is hiding (it\u2019s true though), so he has\nMario arrested. Tosca goes to Scarpia to beg for Mario\u2019s life and some shit goes\ndown from there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this well-reduced version, the action begins with Mario\npainting, and oh my god, since there\u2019s really no set (it\u2019s in the tiny Studio 2\nat Trafalgar Studios which is a tiny dark room) and this is in the round, he\nputs a painting\u2019s frame around the neck of an AUDIENCE MEMBER. This chosen\naudience member is then pretty involved in the action for the next 20 minutes\nor so as Mario and Tosca and Scarpia examine and discuss the painting. IF YOU\nDO NOT WANT THIS TO BE YOU, do not sit in the front rows and be a woman. Our\nparticipant didn\u2019t seem to mind but my god my face would have burnt off from\nmortification-induced redness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My Tosca this evening (it\u2019s a rotating cast like a proper\nopera does), Honey Rouhani, was superb, so it\u2019s a shame she didn\u2019t have as much\nas usual to do. It seemed like Scarpia had an aria too many, and while strong,\nhis voice began to feel grating. Maybe because he\u2019s the bad guy and I was\nitching for him to get all murdered. Okay so Mario gets arrested, and Tosca goes\nto Scarpia and he\u2019s like \u2018I\u2019ll let him go if we do the no-pants dance\u2019 and\nTosca\u2019s all ughhh really ugh I mean I guess okay I gotta save Mario. Scarpia\nshows her a gun that he says has blanks in it, so she will have to pretend to\nshoot Mario and he will have to pretend to die, and then the guards will let\nher escape (with the body?? mmkay). I mean OBVIOUSLY YOU SHOULD TEST THE GUN\nFIRST, TOSCA, like shoot someone in the foot or something. Or the hand so you\ncan run if it\u2019s real? Shit what\u2019s the best thing to shoot to test a gun? I mean\nScarpia clearly! But she doesn\u2019t. Once Scarpia tells her his plan for saving\nMario, he then is all \u2018okay it\u2019s party time\u2019 and she pretends to be letting him\nenter the bone zone but then she STABS HIM IN THE HEAD and it\u2019s the MOST\nSATISFYING murder maybe of all time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After killing a guy nbd she then goes to save Mario and\ntells him the plan of \u2018blanks in the gun\u2019 and OBVIOUSLY that was a lie and she\nkills him and then realizes it and kills herself. Yeah so <em>Tosca<\/em> is a full on murder-sui sitch. I love a good murder-sui but\nI\u2019ve never seen one happen literally at my feet before \u2013 Studio 2 is a tiny\nlittle living room of a theatre and it was eek I was like \u2018call the cops!\u2019 \u2018no\nnot the regular cops!\u2019 Anyway I enjoyed this condensed version a whole lot.\nThere\u2019s a lot of filler in the standard version that gets boring so I\u2019m all in\nfor this one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It helps that <em>Tosca<\/em>\nisn\u2019t one of my most beloved things like <em>La\nBoheme<\/em> is. I was nervous that they\u2019d cut my favorite parts, which was\nundeniable and unavoidable because the whole thing is my favorite part.\nLuckily, they decided to change the story so much that it was like a whole\ndifferent work, making me feel much less precious about it but still enjoying\nall the familiar melodies. I loved being able to compare this version to the\noriginal and noticing what clever little changes they made to allude to the\noriginal (not surprising considering how much work I\u2019ve done comparing it to <em>Rent<\/em>). So <em>La Boheme<\/em> is about two friends, Rodolfo and Marcello, who are both\npoor artists. Rodolfo falls in love with Mimi, a poor young lady who has TB and\nis dying. Marcello has a complicated relationship with his ex-girlfriend\nMusetta. Just think <em>Rent<\/em> and you get\nthe story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here, it was rewritten to be present day London, and Rod hears the famous knock on his door not from a girl who needs a light for her candle but from a guy who is answering Rod\u2019s GRINDR invitation! I mean, it\u2019s forking hilarious. The lyrics had the audience in stitches. It\u2019s not all funny because this guy, who calls himself Mimi to keep it simple, is a drug addict whose eventual demise is from that addiction, but man do they cram in the humor. My favorite little quirk was having Marcello and Musetta (now Melissa because nobody modern is named Musetta, which is a shame, it just means little baby muse) struggle with polyamory. That\u2019s so good. Again, Rouhani\u2019s Melissa was the standout (luckily they included Musetta\u2019s Waltz in this short version). The rewrites made it a lot of fun, and it was a clever modernization. Rewritten for a tenor, Mimi\u2019s music doesn\u2019t scratch the full itch of familiarity you (I) expect from her parts, so I was looking forward to listening to my recordings to hear the Rodolfo-Mimi sections in all their soprano-having glory. But even so, it\u2019s a fun, cheeky version that even the old men who didn\u2019t know what they were getting into with this show seemed to fully enjoy. I definitely recommend <em>Opera<\/em> <em>Undone<\/em> both for newbies and opera aficionados.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">INFORMATION<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each act\/opera is one hour and there\u2019s a 15-minute interval.\nWith a 19:45 (NB!) curtain, Act 1\nended at 20:48. The show ended at 22:00 EXACTLY which deserves a medal. Studio 2\nis tiny and on the same floor as the Trafalgar Studios bar, which means the\nladies room is very convenient. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How fun does it sound to see two of Puccini\u2019s best operas performed in the same night?
